Abstract

In this article, I will investigate all the stagings of Ibsen’s play Gengangere (“Ghosts”), made on Den Nationale Scene (The National Stage) in Bergen, from 1885 to 2011. The purpose of the survey is to investigate what changes one can find in the productions regarding scenography and direction. The material used is archive material from the theatre, located in the Theatre Archive in Bergen. Central to the surveys are the various “regie” manuscripts (production books), stage renderings, photos and newspaper critiques of the performances. What changes to the staging of the play can we track through the archive material? What changes do we find and what does it mean in relation to text, scenography, arrangement and direction? What is the development of the staging of “Ghosts” from the first production to the last?
